Our kids love Dr. Seuss books, so we decided to come up with a theme-related costume for all of them. So we had Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2 costumes. Here are the directions for making them.
For Cat in the Hat, you’ll need a hat, bow tie and gloves. (All of these were store bought.) For “cat suit” use a long sleeve black shirt and black pants. Cut out a large white circle from sticky felt and place it on the shirt. Un-bend wire coat hanger and shape it into a “tail”. Cover with batting and black fabric. Use a safety pin to attach it to the back of the shirt toward the bottom.
Here is how you make Thing 1 and Thing 2 costumes. Buy red long sleeve shirts and red pants. (You can some inexpensive ones from Walmart.) Cut out two round circles from sticky felt and place in the middle of the shirts. Write “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” on the circles with black puff paint.
Apply white face paint to “Cat” and “Things”. Draw a nose and whiskers (black eyeliner works great) on the Cat. Spray “Things” hair blue with blue hair spray paint. These costumes are super easy and when Halloween is over, just remove the felt pieces and they have regular clothes again!
Our 2 sons and daughter had a blast wearing these. I thought they were pretty original and worked very well overall for Halloween costumes. And I’m sure they could work for theme birthday parties as well! Good luck!
